Heat will be deadly by 2041: The Economist's report claims, the mercury will reach 50 degrees in Delhi; More than 17 thousand people will die in Chennai
Europe's media group The Economist has said in a report that the picture of summer in 2041 will be frightening. The mercury will reach 49.3 degrees in Delhi and 17,642 people will die due to heat wave in Chennai.
The Economist gives a hypothetical picture of some possible situations every year. This report has also been prepared on the basis of this. The report is based on historical facts, current estimates and science. It describes the circumstances of the day when three weeks of the worst summer in the history of India would have passed.
South India will be hot. The biggest crisis will fall on the city of Chennai. Hospitals will be crowded with people who are sick from the heat. The real problem for Chennai will be moisture. The heat and moisture in the air is called the wet bulb temperature. It is the minimum temperature at which anything cools through evaporation from the surface.
Wet bulb temperature exceeds 32 degrees in Chennai for last 10 years
People can sweat and cool off even in dry air at 37 degrees human body temperature. But, says physicist Motsim Ashfaq at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, physical labor at a bulb temperature of 32 degrees Celsius is not free of danger. Very few people survive in 35 degree wet bulb temperatures. For the last ten years, the temperature of the wet bulb in Chennai is more than 32 degrees.
585 people died in 2015
After the scorching heat in Hyderabad 26 years ago, efforts to reduce the heat in the city began rapidly. In 2015, 585 people died due to scorching heat in the city and surrounding areas. This was the turning point of change.
The Hyderabad Municipal Corporation had launched the Cool Roof Program in 2017 in low-income areas of the city. These areas are most affected by the heat wave. Inexpensive sheets of white colored polythene were laid on the roofs of the houses. Two degree drop in the temperature of the houses
hypothetical situation of 2041
Cool Roof Program has been implemented in Telangana in 2019. By 2027, over 8,000 buildings in Hyderabad are projected to have cool roofs. Under NREGA, a rural employment scheme implemented in cities in 2030, slums and temporary constructions will be painted white lime. 25 lakh saplings will be planted in the city.
