The tragedy of the Indians who returned from Afghanistan: returning to their homeland in difficult circumstances, did not sleep for 56 hours, did not eat food; Guns raised when confronted with Taliban

Ravikant Gautam, the commandant of ITBP who brought 150 Indians from Afghanistan and Shivpuri, told the story of the struggle, how the Taliban clashed, breath stuck… read his words:

The Indian Embassy celebrated Independence Day at 9 am on August 15, when the sounds of explosions started reverberating. The Taliban were only 50 meters away from us. We knew they were heading towards Kabul. Two of our planes were at the Kabul airbase. We took the first team of 46 people from the embassy to the airport safely, but for the second team, we had to lift the Indians from different places in the city.

The second team consisted of me, the ambassador, 99 commandos, three women, the embassy staff. We left for the airport on the evening of 15th August, but could not reach. A clash broke out with an armed group at a check point. They fired in the air, took out the rocket launchers. We also took up arms. Thought today or he would be martyred here or he would reach the airbase, but after some time the situation got better. We also changed attitude. We did not have to fight, but to get our people out safely. Had there been a fight, I would have died. Then we went back to the embassy.

'Tried to leave four times on August 16'

By the evening of 16 August, they tried to leave four times, but there were armed Taliban everywhere. The airport is only 15 km away from the embassy. Now thought, whatever will happen, will be seen. Left for airbase again at 10.30 pm. Dodging the armed men, reached the airbase at 3.30 pm, then heaved a sigh of relief.

Our C-17 aircraft took off at 5.30 am and landed in Gujarat at 11.15 am. There we were warmly welcomed. After this we were taken to Hindon airbase. No one slept, no one ate food during this whole episode of 56 hours.

(As told to Virendra Bansal)

Employees' belongings were snatched away. The road to the airport was closed. In such a situation, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and NSA Ajit Doval with US counterpart Jack Sullivan. The plane left for India under American security at Kabul airport. India said it will issue emergency 'e-visas' for Afghan citizens.
