Oppo brands like OnePlus, Vivo and Realme are also reportedly planning to launch electric vehicles in India.
However, EV sales still constitute a small fraction of the total auto sales in the country. Expect a lot of traction and speed in the future, as more brands enter the EV space.
A new name has been added to the list, which is one of the leading smartphone makers. While customers may be a little careful in dealing with a new brand, their confidence will be high while buying from a popular brand like Oppo.
It may take a few years for Oppo to launch EVs in India. The first Oppo EV could be unveiled in late 2023 or early 2024. While the electric two-wheeler segment in the country is growing at a rapid pace, mainstream manufacturers continue to focus on petrol-powered vehicles.
This could give companies like Oppo enough time to develop EVs that are specifically suited to Indian conditions. As of now, it is not known what kind of EVs Oppo is planning for India. Earlier, reports indicated that the company has already started work on manufacturing EVs. Oppo has been holding meetings with battery makers and parts suppliers. Some of these firms supply parts to major companies such as Tesla.
The EVs will be a completely new experience for Oppo, as this is the first time it is exploring its options beyond mobile devices. The company will have the option of either locally manufacturing the electric vehicles or importing them. If the objective is to produce in large quantities, local manufacturing will be preferred to keep costs down.
Along with Oppo, others like Realme, OnePlus, and Vivo have also filed trademark applications for EVs.
Taken together, these companies can launch different types of EVs including electric cars and electric two-wheelers. realme has got the nod for the trademark name realme tech-life and 'TL Device'. The registration, which is valid till April 2031, allows Realme to manufacture a range of EVs. This includes anti-theft devices for electric vehicles, self-balancing scooters, self-balancing boards, electric bicycles, electric wheelchairs, and automobiles.
So far, only Realme has been able to get its trademark registration approved. The situation is either in progress or 'objectionable' for others like Oppo, OnePlus, and Vivo.
