Why does lightning fall?
Understand in simple language, when there are clouds in the sky, they collide with each other. When there is friction in the clouds, an electrical charge is produced and an electric field is created. How much danger when lightning strikes
- According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), lightning causes harm to humans in many ways. First, lightning strikes a person directly. However, such cases are rare but dangerous. This happens when a person is in an open field. Death mostly occurs in such cases.
- In the second case, the heat caused by lightning burns the skin. It is just like the whole body gets a shock when the current is struck. During the rain, people who stop somewhere under the cover of a tree or house, they face the same impact of celestial lightning. Such cases are seen the most.
- According to the country's first Annual Lightning Report 2019-20, the highest number of lightning strikes were seen when a person was standing under a tree to avoid rain. In India, 71 percent of the cases were like this. Death was caused by direct lightning in 25 per cent of the cases. Humans were not directly affected by it in 4% of cases.
- According to the NWS, there is a high risk of death and injury due to lightning in land where the current is spread. This happens because the current in the ground is spread over a large area. Its effect is visible far and wide with the help of the ground.
Most deaths due to lightning occurred in July 2019
According to the report, there were 2357 deaths in 2018 and 2876 in 2019 due to lightning. Bihar (400), Madhya Pradesh (400), Jharkhand (334) and Uttar Pradesh (321) had the highest number of deaths due to this. The maximum number of deaths occurred between 25 to 31 July 2019. During this, celestial busyness fell in the country 4 lakh times.
Protect yourself from electricity
- According to the NWS, there is no safe place to escape from lightning. Still, it would be best to stay indoors during this time. Go inside the house as soon as you hear the sound of lightning.
- According to the National Disaster Management Authority, do not touch metal, metallic pipes, electrical systems, TV or cable wires and water when lightning strikes in the sky. These increase the risk because they act like conductors.
- Never lie on the ground as the current spreads rapidly across the surface. When this happens, the risk of being struck by lightning increases even more. The more you protect yourself directly from the ground, the better.
- Keep your hands on your ears so that the sound of thunder from the clouds is not disturbed. Keep the heels of the feet together. Doing so will reduce the risk of electrocution.

The Meteorological Department (IMD) only predicts rain, lightning and thunderstorms in the country. Alerts are issued by adding different colors to how strong the storm will be. Like- Green, Yellow, Orange and Red Alert.
- Green Alert - means there is no danger.
- Yellow Alert - There is a need to be careful, there may be danger.
- Orange Alert - Indicates danger. So be ready.
- Red Alert - Danger of deteriorating weather and heavy damage.
