The construction work of the factory started on 6 April 1968.
This factory is famous as the country's first indigenous steel factory. In this, most of the equipment, equipment and technical skills are indigenous. The first phase of the 1.7 million ton steel ingot of the factory started on 2 October 1972 with the commissioning of the first blast furnace and the construction work was completed on 26 February 1978 after the third blast furnace was commissioned. All the 4 million ton stage units have been commissioned and with modernization in the 1990s, the factory's capacity has been increased to 4.5 million ton liquid steel.
New facilities installed at its Steel Melting Shop-2 include 2 twin strand slab casters and a steel refining unit. The Steel Refining Unit was inaugurated on 19 September 1997 and Continuous Casting Machine was inaugurated on 25 April 1998. With the modernization of Hot Strip Mill, facility of high pressure de-scaler, work roll banding, hydraulic automatic gauge control, quick roll change, laminar cooling etc. has also become available in the factory. The new walking beam, re-heating furnaces are replacing the older less efficient pusher furnaces.
