Ruckus in the monsoon session of Parliament: only 18 hours of work out of 107, loss of 133 crores; Rajya Sabha lasted 21% and Lok Sabha only 13% of the time
Twelve days have passed since the Parliament's monsoon session, but the opposition continues to protest on several issues like the Pegasus espionage case and the farmers' agitation. Due to this impasse, the proceedings of Parliament have been adversely affected. Parliament has been able to run for only 18 hours out of 107 hours in both the houses so far. This caused a loss of Rs 133 crore to the taxpayers.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on July 19, but so far the proceedings of both the Houses have been almost disrupted. About 89 hours of uproar have been witnessed in the monsoon session so far. The session is to go on till August 13. The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha have lasted only about 21% of the scheduled time, while the proceedings of the Lok Sabha are only 13%. Lok Sabha lasted less than 7 hours out of 54 hours, while Rajya Sabha lasted 11 hours out of 53 hours.
Opposition adamant to discuss espionage case
Due to the uproar, the productivity of the House declined by 13.70% in the second week of the monsoon session. In the first week, this figure was 32.20%. On this issue, the opposition says that until the government is ready for discussion on the espionage issue, the protest will not end. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has rejected this demand and said in the Lok Sabha that it is not an issue at all.
The opposition threw pamphlets on the speaker
On July 28, opposition MPs threw pamphlets towards Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding a discussion on the Pegasus espionage case. On this tour, the MPs also raised slogans of Khela Hobe. The action had to be postponed several times on this day.
Angered by the toss of pamphlets, the speaker had threatened to suspend 10 MPs from the House. According to ANI, the names of MPs Gurjit Singh Aujla, TN Prathapan, Manickam Tagore, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Hibi Eden, Jothi Mani Sennamalai, Saptagiri Sankara Ulka, V Vaithilingam and AM Arif were included.
Rahul Gandhi had a meeting with 14 parties
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi held a meeting of 14 like-minded opposition parties on July 28. In this, a plan was made to surround the government. After the meeting, Rahul had said that we will not compromise on Pegasus espionage case, inflation and farmers issue.
