Strong opposition to the appointment of outsiders, interview canceled in Bokaro Steel

In Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL) too, the interview of candidates was canceled on Thursday due to heavy opposition to the appointment of outsiders. Here the interview was to be held for the post of Attendant-cum-Technician Trainee. The local people had stopped the applicants from appearing in the recruitment process.

Local youths under the banner of the Displaced Apprentices Association (VAS) blocked the main gates of BSL Headquarters, Human Resource Department (HRD) and SAIL Refractories Unit Headquarters. This hindered the commencement of the interview. Senior police officials reached the plant and tried to control the situation.

Interviews were to be held on Thursday at SRU Headquarters Sector 4. The protesters also assaulted the security guards of BSL. Local youths demonstrated against the BSL management and demanded jobs and compensation in return for the land given to the company by their ancestors.

Chief communications officer Manikant Dhan said Thursday's interview has been canceled due to protests. He said the situation is being reviewed for further action.

This is the first such incident in the state. Behind this is the campaign to give priority to the local people in the recruitment of political parties. The demand for recruitment of local people in jobs is gaining momentum across the state.

The Hemant Soren government recently enacted a law to reserve 75 per cent of jobs in the private sector for locals up to a monthly salary of Rs 40,000. The state government has also changed the employment policy of the state for class 3 and 4 grade jobs in the government sector, giving priority to local people.

Protesters on Thursday claimed that most of the candidates after getting selected in the written test were called for interview by the BSL management from Rajasthan and other states. Ahmed Hussain of VAS said that the local people have given their land for setting up these plants. We have also completed Plant Training (Apprentice). From last few years we are looking for job from BSL Management. We were given training with job assurance. But even after repeated requests we are not being given jobs. We will not allow outsiders to get these jobs.

Sources said that SAIL-BSL had taken out 49 vacancies of Attendant-cum-Technician Trainee as part of a special recruitment drive. More than 100 candidates selected in the written examination were called for interview from October 21 to October 23.
