            Bokaro Steel Plant wins Greentech Environment and Sustainability Award

AKB NEWS: Bokaro Steel Plant has the distinction of winning the prestigious Greentech Environment and Sustainability Award 2021 in the Eco-Friendly Products category. The Greentech Environment and Sustainability Awards are given for excellence in achieving sustainability goals. The Environment Control Department (ECD) had filed an entry for the award on behalf of BSL on 30 October last year in the eco-friendly product category. Presentation by Nitesh Ranjan, AGM (Environmental Control), BSL before the jury members on 15 November 2021. 

The jury was impressed by Bokaro Steel Plant's innovative initiatives in the production of eco-friendly green steel and efforts to make eco-friendly products. Waste material generated during the steel-making process. The members of the jury included former Chief Inspector of Factories, former MD Canara Bank, former Director ONGC, and many other eminent persons.

New technology reduced carbon emissions

As part of the innovative efforts of Bokaro Steel Plant, in the last seven years, it has played a vital role in cleaning the environment by reducing carbon emissions by 11.7% and dust emissions by 50.9%. Several innovative initiatives have been taken in making eco-friendly products from waste including rail baluster, fly-ash LD slag bricks, use of slag in cement making, slag for paver blocks, and eco-friendly soil conditioners from waste products.

 Recently Bokaro Steel has installed a bio-digester inside the plant to convert the canteen waste into biogas and compost. Led by Amarendu Prakash, Director-in-Charge, BSL has undertaken a campaign to convert the waste into useful material and use it as input material inside the plant and in other industries, thereby generating over Rs 1000 crore annually during the last few years. Revenue has been generated.
